Terrorised by tarmac

If you’ve already spent time running on roads and back streets, you’re probably becoming bored of slogging along never-ending tarmac, counting cars and wishing it was over.
There’s no need to be afraid, you’re not alone. We’ve been in your position. Races like the London Marathon or the Great North Run are bucket list events for most runners, experienced and amateur alike. But with record-breaking numbers of applications for 2027, surely it’s time to redirect your efforts and finances.
Trail running offers a sense of freedom and relaxation that dodging cars and pedestrians simply cannot. We’re not saying it’s easy, it’s hard work and almost ankle-breaking but it’s very rewarding. You just need to give it time.
Where to find running trails near Leeds

It can feel tough if you live surrounded by people, lights and noise, but most cities have introductory trails into nature not far from the centre, epic, right?
Just outside Leeds city centre, you can find some great beginner-friendly trails in Meanwood. It’s accessible, leafy, and a proper antidote to the pavement.
But it’s not just Leeds, Yorkshire is a trail runner’s haven. Home to the Peak District, the Dales and the North Yorkshire Moors, there are approximately 2,000 spectacular routes across varied distances, elevations and terrain.
Getting there without a car

These places are more rural, so they’re less accessible without a car but trains are still a great option. You can depart at Ribblehead station and begin a run around the Yorkshire Three Peaks. Just remember to pack appropriately and bring a little cash for an ice cream from one of the vans near the famous viaduct. Highly recommended.
Joining a local running club

Joining a local running or hiking club is one of the best moves you can make as a beginner trail runner. It’s a great way to meet like-minded people, opens up travel opportunities, and adds a layer of safety to your outings.
Speaking of safety you should always let family, friends, or a local shop know if you’re heading out on the trails alone. Most running clubs have Facebook groups you can reach out to before committing.
Start trail running: our final thought
It’s becoming ever harder to enter the big bucket list races, with more people obsessing over the finish line Instagram photo. Turning your attention to trail running or ultrarunning is a completely understandable and highly recommended move.
Not every area is as well-served as Leeds when it comes to accessible routes, which is exactly why apps like AllTrails and Strava are so valuable for finding pre-built routes near you.
